THE LECK FAMILY

Our interest in this family originates 16.11.1773, when William Tate (See Ref S5) married Eleanor Leck at Wooler, Northumberland.

Eleanor Leck was baptised 15.9.1747 at Chillingham, said to be the daughter of Ralph.

We found a marriage of Ralph Leck and Margaret Munnilaws (See Ref S551) or Munilaws at Chillingham 21.7.1744. There was a baptism at Cornhill, just over the Scottish border 23.5.1725 of Margaret, the daughter of George Monilaws, so she could have been Ralp Leck’s 19-year-old children’s nanny after his first wife Alice died.

Ralph Leck’s first marriage had been at Wooler 30.8.1732 to Alice Macdonel.  They had children baptised at Wooler as follows:

Thomas           Baptised at Wooler25.9.1733.  Son of Ralph Leck of Chatton.

                        Died before 1737

Charles            Baptised at Wooler12.19.1735. Son of Ralph Leck of Chatton.

                        Buried at Wooler 20.6.1757.

Thomas           Baptised at Ilderton 29.5.1737.  Killed by cart overturning and buried at  Chillingham 29.7.1743.

We have not seen a burial for Alice Leck (nee Macdonel) but another researcher suggests 1743. Perhaps she was in the cart also?

Ralph and Margaret Leck, after their marriage, as above, 21.7.1744 had children as follows:

Robert              Baptised Chillingham 14.4.1745.

Margaret          Born 17.5.1746, baptised at Wooler 19.6.1746.  Buried there 19.9.1746.

Elanor              Baptised Chillingham 15.9.1747.  Married at Wooler 16.11.1773 William Tate per introduction above.

Catherine         Baptised Wooler 1 or 5.5.1749, Married at Wooler 8.10.183 Peter Robertson.

Margaret “Leake” Baptised Wooler 9.8.1751 and buried there 12.8.1751.

James “Leake” Baptised at Wooler 9.2.1753.

Alice                Baptised at Wooler 25.3.1757 as daughter of Ralph and Margaret.  Buried there 6.9.1759.

Elizabeth         Born 20,5.1759 and baptised at Wooler 6.7.1759.

Alice                Born 14.3.1760 and baptised at Wooler 25.3.1760.

Ralph Leck was buried at Wooler 31.1.1776, aged possibly 71, and Margaret Leck   (nee Munnilaws) was buried at Wooler 17.7.1791, aged 67.

As to Ralph Leck’s origins, another researcher has him born in Wooler 1705, the son of James Leck and Barbary Gaer who married there 10.2.1702 (NS), a marriage we have also seen,  Although this fits our Ralph’s marriage and death dates, we do not think that there is anything more we can say about the Lecks.
