The Monilaws Family

Ref. S511

Our interest in this family originates 21.7.1744 when Ralph Leck (see Ref.S51) married Margaret Munnilaws at Chillingham, Northumberland.

We found only one baptism of a Margaret that was suitable.  This was at Coldstream, Berwickshire, Scotland 23.5.1725 for the daughter of George Monilaws.  He had five children baptised at Coldstream, as follows:

  • Katharine 29.9.1716
  • Agnes 31.12.1718
  • James 19.2.1721
  • Margaret 23.5.1725.  Married Ralph Leck, as stated above.
  • George 4.6.1731     Married at Swinton and Simprim, Berwickshire (when he was resident at Coldstream) 14.4.1752 Alison Johnston of Swinton. A daughter Alison was baptised at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire in 1740 when George was resident at Blackburn in Cockburnspath Parish.

Monilaws Aitcheson family

At no point was the mother’s name mentioned, so we looked for George Monilaws (or suchlike) marriages in Northumberland or the Scottish Borders prior to 1717. There was one at Ladykirk, which is not far from Coldstream, situated on the north bank of the Tweed opposite Norham, This was 24.10.1712 between George Monilaws and Margaret Aitcheson, with a baptism at Ladykirk 13.1.1713 of John, son of George Monilaws, no mother’s name being given.

Another researcher has George Monilaws marrying in Edinburgh in 1712, but we prefer Ladykirk because of its proximity to Coldstream and the baptism of the eldest child there.

We have not seen any suitable death or birth entries for George or Margaret Monilaws so there is nothing more to be said.
