The Morvinson Family

Ref. Y7

Maria Morvinson was baptised 12 September 1816 at Sculcoates Parish Church, the daughter of Abraham Morvinson, a farmer of Waterworks Street and Ann his wife.

By the time Maria married William Train (see Ref. Y6) 21.2.1842, at Holy Trinity Church, Abraham had evidently died, still a farmer.  Her address was given as Upper Union Street.  She made her mark, rather than sign her name.  GRO index says Morrinson.  The rest of Maria’s story appears in the Train chapter.  She died in May 1897, aged 80.

Not the least of our problems, in following up this family, is that the name has been often wrongly transcribed or indexed. Morvenson, Morvison, Morrison, Morrinson, Malkinson, Mawkinson, Marlinson, Markinson and Morrinkson are all varieties that we have noted.

The name Morvinson is quite rare, especially in the East Riding. There were, however, a great number of families with that name in Lincolnshire, particularly at Stallingborough and other locations around Grimsby.  They were often referred to as Malkinson, possibly from a wish to anglicise the name.

Despite much effort, we have found no further references to our Abraham Morvinson anywhere in Britain.
