Ref. Y22
THE HILL FAMILY
Elisabeth Hill married Thomas Young (see Ref Y2), Mike’s 4xGr-grandfather on 30.3.1758 at Snaith, Yorkshire, where both of them lived. Based on a typical age at marriage, we speculated that she was the daughter of Robert Hill of Norton in the Parish of Campsall, being baptised 31.3.1732 (New Style). Campsall is, after all, contiguous with the Parish of Snaith. Her father had married Jane Burland the previous 30 June, in the same parish. For the Burland family story see Ref. Y221.
Elisabeth had two younger brothers, Thomas being baptised 26.8.1733 and Robert 17.11.1735 but, since there was a burial at Campsall 27.5.1735 of a Robert Hill of Norton, we believe the father never saw his younger son. Naturally we were interested in what then happened to the widow, Jane Hill. We might have expected her to remarry and we believe she actually did that, although not until 21.7.1751 at Campsall. Her husband was John Hall of Snaith and it is clear from her burial there 6.2.1760 and his burial 29.8.1760, they lived at Cowick. This is where we believe Thomas Young was when he married the daughter Elisabeth, so it seems to tie up rather well.
In common with at least one other researcher, we think that Robert Hill was previously married, since there is a Campsall burial 8.12.1728 of Jane Hill, wife of Robert Hill of Norton and there were baptisms of this couple’s children as follows:
John 2.3.1712 (NS)
Helen 26.6.1715
Robert 26.10.1720
William 27.3.1724
However, we know nothing more about this couple.
