The Turner Family of Northumberland

Ref. S23

Jane Turner married Thomas “Ruil” at Rothbury 4.6.1726 (For the Rule Family see Ref. S2).

After Thomas’s death 2.3.1761 at Rothbury it is believed that the widow lived with son John at Ford and then moved with him to Wooler, where three of John’s sons settled.  As the Rule story says, there is a burial entry at Wooler for Jane Rule 28.8.1796. aged 95.  Hence we would expect a baptism entry around 1701.

Turner-Watson family

The only Northumberland Jane Turner baptism that fits is at Felton 31.8.1701 the daughter of George Turner. Felton is about seven miles from Rothbury along the Coquet, i.e. not too far as to make an encounter between John and Jane unlikely.  This date implies an age of 24 for Jane when she married, just about the same as her husband.

There is a crop of Turner baptisms of that era at Felton, Longframlington and Longhorsley all of which are within five miles of each other. On a reasonable hypothesis basis, we think Jane Turner’s mother was Alice Watson, probably baptised 13.10.1672 at Stannington, the daughter of William Watson.  The George Turner family details are set forth in Appendix 1 hereto.

Alice sadly died at the age of 41 which left George Turner with a young family, so it was not surprising that he remarried.  This was 3.7.1716 at Longhorsley the bride being Mary Dixon who we think was baptised 28.10.1680 at Bothal with Hebburn, the daughter of Andrew Dixon.  Admittedly this has her having her last child aged 46 but she is not the only such case we have come across.

Further back

George Turner could well have been the lad baptised 29.6.1673 at Felton, son of Ralph Turner. This would make him very much of an age with his first wife Alice and seven years older than second wife Mary.  Unfortunately we have not traced any other children of Ralph Turner nor any marriage.
