The Stothard Family

Ref. S8

Mary Stothard and John Bolam [see Ref. S7] married 5.3.1836 at St Andrews (C of E) Chapel at Lamesley*, County Durham.  Both were said to be of the parish and both made their mark.  For once, the 1841 Census entries (at Wapping, Houghton le Spring) did not have the ages rounded down, with Mary said to be 33, implying a birth between 7.6.1807 and 6.6.1808 within the County.

* Lamesley, is in the Team Valley, north of Kibbleworth and Birtley.  On a modern OS map it is at Map Reference 250581.  The church appears to be still there, on the east bank of the river.

Unfortunately neither partner survived to the 1851 Census, falling victim to Cholera within nine days of each other in September 1849, when they were living at Wapping in the area of Houghton le Spring and Chester le Street.  According to her brother-in-law, Mary was 38 when she died 11.9.1849.  Thus would imply a birth between 12.9.1810 and 11.9.1811, i.e. very different to the above.

Searching the indexes for 1810-11, we found no Stothard etc. Durham baptisms whereas there were three candidates for the 1807-08 period.  One was at Sunderland, which is too far away, leaving:

(a) Lamesley born 6.12.1808, baptised 3.7.1808 Mary Stodart, daughter of Henry and Margaret and

(b) Chester le Street baptised 16.10.1808 Mary Stoddart or Stoddard, daughter of Andrew and his wife Ann Hindmarsh.

In (a) there is something wrong with the dates – perhaps the birth was 6.12.1807, in which case we have a match on that as well as Lamesley being where Mary got married, so we are going with that.

Stodart Maddison family

Henry Stodart married Margaret Maddison at Lamesley 14.10.1792 and, as well as Mary, we have seen Henry, born 15.2.1801, baptised 31.5.1801 and Esther, baptised 8.7.1804, both at Lamesley. We have not seen any death entry for Margaret but the GRO reference at Chester le Street 1840 Q4 for Henry Stoddart might be worth looking at. There are quite a few Margaret Maddison Durham baptisms that could be ours, but we do not have enough to go on.  We have not found any Henry Stodart entries.
