The Rule Family Part Two

As explained at the beginning of Part One, an important object of making our research available through this website is to invite family researchers with interests in common with ourselves to make themselves known, if only to compare notes.  It is clear, from looking at a number of internet published family trees that several descendants of the early Rules mentioned in Part One have succeeded in identifying a number of past generations of the family without being able to get all the way back to the 18C Rules.

We therefore present two documents, as under:

Rule Families List

Starting with the family of Thomas Rule (1702? – 1761) numbered as 1 and those of his sons as 12 and 13 and then his grandsons ranging between 133 to 139, we present the salient details of all the descendant Rule families that we are aware of up to 1911.  There are 60 altogether, with some later ones having seven digit references.

Rule Families Index of Fathers

This lists the fathers of the above families in alphabetical order of first names and then in order of date of birth.

Suggested Modus Operandi

A researcher who has a Rule male ancestor who married prior to 1911 should do the following:

1.    Search the Rule Families Index of Fathers for a matching first name and date of birth.  As his date of death,  marriage date and wife’s name is also shown there should little doubt about whether a “match” has been achieved.

2.    Shorten the reference number shown in the Index by one digit and use the new reference number to look for the subject’s family in the Rule Family Lists

3.    Repeat the previous step to complete the pedigree back to the first Thomas Rule, i.e. list 1.

Note:  How the Rule Family Lists and the Appendices to Part One fit together

Appendix 2 describes the family of John Rule and Mary Anderson, i.e. list 13, and it also covers all the three figure lists except 138 (Robert Rule and Mary Davy) which is described in Appendix 1.  Appendix 3 describes the family of Thomas Rule and Jane Turner, i.e. list 1.
