THE MATHEW FAMILY

Our interest in this family stems from the marriage at Knaresborough 25.1.1680 (NS) between Philip Barker (Ref. M72 refers) and Jane Mathew.  We believe that she was baptised at Knaresborough 8.6.1651, the daughter of John Mathew and Jane Browne.

Mathew Browne Family

John Mathew and Jane Browne married at Knaresborough 29.10.1643.  We are inclined to think that the bride had been baptised 23.4.1615, the daughter of William Browne and Marie Whetehouse, as explained in Ref. M7221.  Although the  scanned images of the parish records are generally clear and evidently well-preserved, as was customary back then, professions and locations were not much mentioned so we know little about who these people were and what they did. 

John And Jane’s family details are given in Appendix hereto. 

John Mathew was buried at Knaresborough 12.3.1653 (NS), aged approximately 40 and Jane, his widow was buried there 25.10.1653, aged 38.  Thus our Jane Mathew was orphaned before she was three years old, possibly with a brother a couple of years older than her.

Going further back

Searching back for baptisms for a John Mathew working back from around 1625, the two that looked interesting were both at Knaresborough that were not long apart, i.e. 26.8.1612 and 8.6.1614 each said to be son of John Mathew. We searched for John Mathew marriages at Knaresborough over previous decades and found just two.  Boyds Marriage Index had one at Spofforth featuring Ann Thompson and “John le”.  Fortunately we found a link to the book Paver’s Marriage Licences which in the 1612 list had one for John Mathew of Spofforth and Ann Thompson of Knaresborough.  The other was in the Knaresborough register for 13.7.1613 between John Mathew and Jaine Kighley.  There are numerous baptisms for the these two families at Knaresborough but it is not possible to decide which is “ours”.
