The Kellott Family

Ref. S71

Mary Kellot married Thomas Bolam (See Ref. S7) 28.9.1793 at Houghton le Spring, County Durham.  We meet various spellings of the family name.  As Mary survived to be noted in both the 1841 and 1851 Censuses, we knew that she was born around 1772 at Old Lambton, County Durham.  This led us to a baptism at Chester le Street 7.7.1771 of Mary Kellott, daughter of George and Mary.  This in turn took us to a marriage there 27.12.1767 between George Kellett and Mary Cockson*.  We also noticed an older sister Jane, baptised 11.12.1768.

*As all the other references we found used the Coxon spelling, that is our preference. See Ref. S711 for the family story.

Less than a year after Mary’s marriage, the family, who lived in Harraton, would have been shocked by the father George, at the age of 63, being one of the 38 miners who were killed in an explosion at the mine there.  He was buried at Chester le Street 14.6.1794.  The widow Mary was likewise buried 25.2.1814, aged 84, although the register says 81.  We are indebted to the cousin of Sheena who drew our attention to the information available from the Coal Mining History Resource Centre.

Kellot Elliott Family

Taking things further back, we have seen an 11.4.1731 baptism of George Kellett, son of Robert, again at Chester le Street, together with five siblings, the children of Robert Kellot and Ann Elliott, who married at Chester le Street 15.11.1718.  Details are given in Appendix 1.  The mother Ann could have been the “Ann Ellett” baptised at Chester le Street 8.6.1690 were it not that there was a similarly named burial there 1.3.1710.

Robert Kellot “of Lambton” was buried at Chester le Street 24.7.1736, aged 43, and his widow likewise 28.1.1765, age not known.

Kellot Gardner Family

Reviewing Kellot etc births across the turn of the 17the Century we saw a baptism at Chester le Street 27.11.1692 for Robert Kellett son of William Kellett.  There was no likely marriage for the latter in Durham but there was one 3.7.1687 at Dalton in Furness, Lancashire, where the bride was Elizabeth Gardner, which appeared to result in no children being baptised thereabouts in the years following.  On the other hand, a William Kellett was credited with the baptism of six children starting from the year after the marriage, so we are inclined to believe that this is our line of descent, per Appendix 2.
