The Browne Family
Our interest in the Browne name stems from the marriage at Knaresborough, Yorkshire, 29.10.1643 between John Mathew (See Ref. M722) and Jane Browne. We did not find any Jane Browne baptisms at Knaresborough but there were several that looked credible at Ripley, which is about five miles from Knaresborough, We are inclined to think that our Jane Browne was baptised at Ripley 23.4.1615, the daughter of William Browne and Marie Whetehouse, since she and John Mathew named their second son William.
William Browne and Marie Whetehouse married at Ripley 8.11.1607 and had children baptised there as follows:
Jane 4.9.1608. Presumably died before 1615.
Elsabeth 1.4.1610.
William 24.8.1612. Buried 1.5.1613.
Frances 5.9.1613, the father said to be of Byrsett. Buried 20.1.1619
Jaine 23.4.1615. Married at Knaresborough 29.10.1643 John Mathew. See above
William 3.8.1617.
George 2.7.1620.
We have not seen burial entries for William and Marie.
Going further back
The only promising baptisms for a William Browne who married in 1607 were both at Topcliffe, North Riding, about 15 miles from Ripley on the other side of Ripon. There was one 26.8.1582, the father being John Browne of Murton and another 13.2.1585 the son of Thomas Browne of Dalton. We simply do not have enough information to choose.
