Ref K3
Mary Aughterlony, a 30 year old domestic servant who was then resident at Skilltimuir, Cockpen, Midlothian, married John Keith (JK II – See Ref. K1) at Skilltimuir Presbyterian Church 26.3.1861. She died at Lasswade 10.4.1880, aged 50. The surname has been spelled in a variety of ways in the various records.
Auchterlonie Butters family
Mary Aughterlony’s marriage lines revealed her deceased parents as William Auchterlony, a sailor, and Mary, nee Butters (See Ref. K4). The information on the Censuses of 1861 and 1871 implied that Mary Auchterlonie was born at Cults, Fife, 1829 or 1830 and although we have not found a baptism entry for her we are pretty sure that her parents were William Auchterlonie and Mary Buttercase who married at Cults 11.1.1818 and had at least seven children, as shown in Appendix 1 hereto. We have not found any of the family in any Census (except Mary immediately after her marriage) possibly because some of the Fife 1841 Census original copies were lost in transit to Edinburgh, including all of Cults.
Auchterlonie Prett family
We think that it is a reasonable speculation that the above William Auchterlonie was the boy born 19.9.1795 and baptised the next day at Kettle, a parish contiguous with Cults, the son of Robert Auchterlonie and Ann Prett (See Ref. K31) who married 28.12.1787 at Kettle. See Appendix 2.
Auchterlonie Hutt family
Again, as reasonable speculation, we think that the above Robert Auchterlonie was the boy baptised at Dunino, Fife, 22.1.1764, the son of Robert Auchterlony and Jean Hutt (See Ref. K32) who married at St Andrews and St Leonards 24.10.1751. Their family are listed in Appendix 3.
Aughterlony Hutchen family
Continuing the theme, we believe that Robert was baptised 20.1.1726, the son of James Aughterlony and Agnes Hutchen who married at St Andrews and St Leonard 5.12.1717. Their family is listed in Appendix 4.
