The Butters/Buttercase Family

Ref K4

The parents of Sheena’s great-grandmother, Mary Aucherlonie (See Ref. K3), William Auchterlonie and Mary Buttercase, married at Cults 11.1.1818.

Buttercase/Butter Husband family

Our Mary was the third child and eldest daughter of George Buttercase and Ann Husband (See Ref.K41) who married at Leuchars, Fife 1.11.1796.  Three of their children were baptised there and then five more at Cults.  The move of domicile seems to have prompted a shortening of the name to Butter, although Mary seems to have added an “s”.  Details are at Appendix 1 hereto.

Buttercase Hey Family

On a reasonable assumption basis, we think that George Buttercase was baptised 18.1.1774 at St Andrews and St Leonards, Fife , the son of George Buttercase and Isabel Hey.  They married 12.11.1773 in the same place, he being styled “Butter” and she “Hay”.  Their family is listed in Appendix 2 hereto.  We have not come to any conclusion about Isabel’s origins.  There was an Isabel Haw baptised 1750 at Forgan, which is on the north coast of Fife and also an Isabel Hay at Crail in 1748.

Buttercase Mitchell family

Again, on the same basis, we found a baptism at St Andrews and St Leonards 20.5.1751 for George Butters, son of George Butters and Agnes Mitchell.  It seems that they married in Glasgow in November 1746 but appeared before the St Andrews and St Leonards Church 4.12.1746 to proclaim their marriage and to promise twenty pence to the poor.  We have also seen a baptism for a daughter Elizabeth Buttercase 28.6.1754 at Glasgow.

Further back

We have not traced George’s baptism, although we did notice one for an Agnes Mitchell in 1726 at St Andrews and St Leonards.  However it was quite a common name.
